Digital Telephony

The advent of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has revolutionised internal organisation and global communication. Digital telephony is now affordable enough that organisations of any size can enjoy the flexibility that it offers. Reliability over wider area networks has reached such a level that cost benefits can now be realised, too.

Flexibility: Moving telephone extensions between offices no longer requires physical cable re-routing or patching. Via a web-based control panel a simple update through can route an individual’s calls from one office to another. Alternatively, users can log in to handsets when seated at their desks to ensure calls are always routed directly to them. Where a converged infrastructure is installed (in which normal network data and voice traffic flow over the same network) phones can be connected to the system anywhere that a network wall port exists.

Mobility: Users can ‘take their phone system with them’ by connecting to it remotely using their laptops or home desktop computers with a microphone and speakers. Alternatively remote workers can be provided with the same handsets they use in the office to provide a consistent experience wherever they are.

Cost: Cost savings can be achieved on nearly all call types by using a service provider that guarantees VoIP Quality of Service (QoS) at the network level from the point it leaves the building. If the incumbent provider can’t be beaten on some call types then Cost Based Routing ensures that whatever call is placed, it travels to its destination at the lowest possible cost whether over the internet or normal telephone network.
